More men begin their training as ’educator’

For a number of years now, there has been a rise in the proportion of men studying at training colleges for educator (ECEC/youth worker) in Germany. During the academic years 2009/2010 to 2013/2014, the proportion of male students increased from 13.8% to 16.3%, which corresponds to a rise of 2.5 percentage points. Since educators trained in Germany can also work with youths and young adults (for example in group homes), this increase does not necessarily correlate with an increase in the number of male ECEC workers.

In Germany in 2013 a total of 19,055 ECEC male workers, interns etc were employed in ECEC centres. This corresponds to a relative proportion of 4.1 %. The proportion of male ECEC workers (not including interns, etc.) was only 3.4%, though. The proportion of men has also been developing quite differently in the various German federal states.
